Gioconda Belli is a Nicaraguan poet, writer and political activist. She was involved in the Nicaraguan Revolution from a very young age and occupied important positions in the Sandinista Party and in the revolutionary government. She left the Sandinista Party in 1993 after Daniel Ortega’s turned it into his fiefdom and is today one of the most notable critics of his government. She won the Casa de las Americas Prize in 1978 for her poetry book “Line of fire”, and the prize for the Best Political Novel of the Year in Germany in 1989 for her novel The Inhabited Woman. Her work has been translated into many languages. She’s written six novels, a memoir, six books of poetry and two children’s books, aside from essays and political commentary. Her poetry has been awarded numerous prizes. Her memoir “The Country under my skin” was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in 2003 and selected as one of the best books of the year by the same newspaper. Her novel The Scroll of Seduction was published by Harper Collins in 2005. In February 2008, she won one of the most prestigious Spanish prizes, Biblioteca Breve for her novel, Infinity in the Palm of her hand. In 2010 she won the “Otra Orilla Hispano-American Prize for her novel, “El Pais de las Mujeres” (A Women’s Country). She is a member of the Royal Spanish Academy of Letters and a member of PEN. She divides her time between Los Angeles and Managua. She is married to Charles Castaldi and has four kids.

Nacida en Managua, Nicaragua.
Su obra incluye poesía, novela, una memoria y un cuento para niños.
Su primer libro “Sobre la Grama” (1972), ganó el premio de poesía de la Universidad Nacional de Nicaragua. En 1978, obtuvo el Premio Casa de las Américas (Cuba) por su libro “Línea de Fuego¨. Entre 1982 y 1987, publicó tres libros de poesía: “Truenos y Arco Iris”, “Amor Insurrecto” y “De la costilla de Eva”. En 1988, publicó su primera novela “La Mujer Habitada” que obtuvo el Premio de la Fundación de Libreros, Bibliotecarios y Editores Alemanes y el Premio Anna Seghers de la Academia de Artes de Alemania. Posteriormente publicó “Sofía de los Presagios” (1990), “El Taller de las Mariposas” (1992) “Waslala” (1996), “El País bajo mi piel” (2001, nominado como uno de los mejores libros del año por Los Angeles Times), “El Pergamino de la Seducción” (2005); en 2008, su novela “El Infinito en la Palma de la Mano” que ganó en España el Premio Biblioteca Breve y en México el Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. En 2010, su novela “El País de las Mujeres” recibió el Premio Hispanoamericano “La Otra Orilla”.Su obra poética incluye también: Apogeo”(1998), “Mi íntima multitud”, ganador del Premio Internacional de Poesía Generación del 27( 2002), “Fuego soy apartado y espada puesta lejos” ganador del Premio Internacional de Poesía Ciudad de Melilla (2006) y “Escándalo de Miel” (antología), 2010.
Sus novelas y poemas se han traducido a más de catorce idiomas. Es miembro del Pen Club Internacional y miembro correspondiente de la Academia Nicaragüense de la Lengua. Escribe para diversos periódicos nacionales e internacionales y tiene un blog en el periódico nicaragüense El Nuevo Diario y en el diario The Guardian de Londres. Es madre de tres hijas y un hijo y reside alternativamente en Managua y Los Ángeles.
